Navigating Emotions (NEmo-Y)
For Youths

Empowering youths and peer leaders to build a sustainable mental health ecosystem within schools and the community

Are you an Educator, School Leader or Youth Community leader? If you are looking to create a strong peer support culture in school and the community, then you’re at the right place.

At Bettr we found that the best way to create a culture of supportive peers begins with a whole-organisation approach to
creating emotionally intelligent individuals.

Serve as a preventative measure, the NEmo programme aims to introduce EQ competencies, foster a growth mindset and empower them with foundational tools to navigate life’s challenges and cultivate inclusive environments.

By training youth leaders, we aim to build a scalable peer safety net within these organisations that peer leaders drive. As a significant adult in these youths’ lives, you can make this happen by working with us to implement this in your school, institution or community.

Who can apply for NEmo

  • Local schools / educational institutions with students aged between 13 to 17.

  • Youth organisations that work with youths aged between 13 to 17.

Why join NEmo for Youths programme?

Mental health challenges are on the rise particularly among youths

  • 1 in 3 experience internalising mental health symptoms (eg. sadness, anxiety and loneliness)

  • 1 in 6 have externalising mental health symptoms (e.g. hyperactivity, rule-breaking and aggression)

Insufficient resources focusing on preventing and improving youths mental resilience and emotional capacity

  • Current ecosystems are mainly dealing with manifested symptoms and intervention work

Lack of resources that trains peer leaders on how to build on self and peer mental and emotional resilience

  • This results in an over-reliance on counselling resources and public healthcare/educators to intervene and “fire-fight”

  • NEmo for Youth would explore strategies to build community and scale the peer support community by taking a whole-school approach.

About the Navigating Emotions (NEmo) series:

Informed by years of youth work experience, we found the best way to develop mental well-being and resilience goes beyond an individual approach and starts with creating holistic and inclusive environments where youths are supported in all facets of their lives. The key environments where the majority of youths spend most time include their schools and homes.

Hence, Bettr Lives strives to build supportive and inclusive environments, both in school and at home, through its NEmo programme series. Ultimately, we hope to empower youths to be emotionally resilient in coping with life challenges, foster positive relationships, nurture compassion and enable them to be well-adjusted in their adulthood.

The NEmo series includes:

Our Approach

Our philosophies and programmes are grounded in the 6 Seconds model of Emotional Intelligence, which refers to the capacity to blend thinking and feeling to make optimal decisions and it is critical to having a successful relationship with yourself and others.

To provide a practical and accessible way to learn and practise emotional intelligence, Six Seconds developed a three-part model as a process – an action plan for using emotional intelligence in daily life.

This model of EQ-in-Action begins with three important pursuits: to become more aware (noticing what you do), more intentional (doing what you mean), and more purposeful (doing it for a reason).

As a preferred partner of Six Seconds in Singapore, we adopt their framework and utilise scientifically validated and credible assessments to empower our participants to understand and build their emotional intelligence through actionable steps.
